Bail application of 12 SANDF officials accused of murder adjourned

The bail application of 12 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Special Task Force members has been adjourned to tomorrow in the Randburg Magistrate’s court in Johannesburg.

This is for the verification of the address of one of the accused.

The group faces charges related to the 2023 murder of Hawks specialist investigator Lieutenant Colonel Frans Mathipa.

They are also facing charges relating to the kidnapping and disappearance of Ethiopian national and alleged ISIS leader Abdella Abadiga in December 2022.

Mathipa was reportedly investigating the disappearance of Abadiga, when he was gunned down in August 2023.

The prosecutor earlier told the court that there have been challenges in terms of confirming the address of accused number six and that when arrested, he took police to his residence.

However, he could not unlock the house.

His lawyer says the accused had gone to Nigeria for six months on a course and when he returned, he did not have the keys to the property.

But the magistrate dismissed this saying that is not going to help because the police were not able to access the house.

And that anybody can point out the house and say it belongs to them.

The bail hearing continues.
