Just days after a sit-in due to unpaid wages and emergency meetings to resolve the issue, Banyana Banyana and the South African Football Association are in the news for the wrong reasons again.
SABC News has reliably learnt that SAFA and Sasol – Banyana Banyana’s main sponsor – have failed to come to terms on a new agreement and that their 16-year long partnership has now come to an end.
The contract between SAFA and the global chemicals and energy company was first established in 2009 and was crucial in developing and promoting women’s football in South Africa.
Sasol’s sponsorship extended to both the women’s national team and the Sasol League – the semi-professional league that provides opportunities for female footballers in the country.
Banyana Banyana are currently in Morocco preparing to defend their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title they won for the first time in 2022.
It’s uncertain how the latest developments will affect Banyana Banyana and the league.
Attempts to get comments from SAFA have been unsuccessful so far.
