The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department has advised motorists to avoid the N12 highway at Putfontein and use alternative routes.
This is due to earlier protest action on the N12 in that section.
It is reported that residents of Chief Albert Luthuli are protesting over a five-day power outage and are demanding that their councillor address the issue.
EMPD spokesperson Joy Mdlhuli says motorists coming from the east can opt for the R51 Kingsway Road (447) and motorists from the west can take the Snake Road (440) off ramp.
“Traffic is now flowing as it was barricaded earlier on. The protesters are still around and along the freeway, some on the Putfontein bridge and attempting to throw burning tyres over the bridge. The situation is still volatile, however, there’s high police visibility.”
