Govt welcomes release of two South Africans in Equatorial Guinea

The South African government has welcomed the release of two South African nationals from detention in Equatorial Guinea.

This release follows the granting of clemency by the President of Equatorial Guinea.

Peter Shane Huxham and Frederic Potgieter are engineers in the oil and gas industry.

They were arrested in February of 2023 and subsequently sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment.

They were convicted on drug-related charges with a staggering R93 million fine each.

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola says this is a relief for the government and their families.

“It’s a great relief to the South African government and to the families and we would like to convey our message of gratitude to the government of Equatorial Guinea. We also want to thank the family for cooperating with us.”
