AUBBTA accuses Joburg MMC Kunene of lying about bus rank crackdown

The African Unite Borders Bus Trucks Association (AUBBTA) has accused Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport, Kenny Kunene, of lying to the public.

AUBBTA claims that Kunene promised to close illegal bus ranks in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, but has not done so.  The association alleges that illegal immigrants are being transported through these unauthorised bus ranks.

The association is also calling for an end to the harassment of street vendors.

“MMC Kenny Kunene, together with some of the vigilant groups wearing bulletproof vests, are the owners. We suspect that some own these illegal bus ranks in the City of Johannesburg,” says Chairperson of AUBBTA, Phumudzo Mukhwathi.

He says Kunene is friends with the owners of the said bus ranks under his department as MMC of Transport.

He won the election through Abahambe. “Together, they are part of the Government of National Unity. Why can’t they go and close those illegal bus ranks?” asks Mukhwathi.
