Police assign special team to investigate WSU deputy VC murder

National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola says they have established a special team to investigate the murder of Walter Sisulu University Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Sinethemba Mpambane.

Mpambane was killed outside the institution’s Mthatha Campus on Thursday.

The Commissioner also confirmed that Mpambane had R27 000 in his possession at the time of his attack.

The university’s Mthatha campus has been in the spotlight recently after a third-year student, Sisonke Mbolekwa, was fatally shot, allegedly by a residence manager.

Masemola says the motive for Mpambane’s killing is not yet known.

“We have established an investigation team comprising multi-disciplinary teams of CI, Serious and Violent Crimes to look into the cause of the shooting because currently we don’t know the motive,” says Masemola.

He says it doesn’t look like they took anything because his laptop, cellphones, and some cash were found in the car. His cell phones were also found in the car.

“Surely the motive can’t be robbery; it’s something else because nothing was taken from him. That’s how far we are, but we are looking at all angles in terms of the investigation.
