Police are investigating a case of kidnapping after a woman was rescued by Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD) officers yesterday.

JMPD spokesperson, Xolani Fihla says officers were patrolling on the N1 South highway when they observed a car travelling without its headlights on.

He says officers pulled up alongside the vehicle to alert the driver and a woman inside the vehicle screamed for help through an open window.

Fihla says the driver of the vehicle accelerated, leading to a high-speed chase.

“Upon stopping, the driver of the Hyundai abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. Backup was immediately called for and the officers rescued the woman who confirmed she had been kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend from her workplace in Midrand, where she was working night shift. A case of kidnapping was opened at the Florida SAPS and the vehicle, used in the commission of the crime was seized for further investigation,” says Fihla.
