Technology a must in crime fight: Mchunu

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu says there’s an urgent need to use advanced technology to fight crime.

The recently released fourth quarter crime statistics showed some declines in crime rates.

However, violent crime remains high with the January to March 2025 data showing more than 5 700 people were murdered in the country.

Mchunu briefed the media in Pretoria on his department’s latest plans to strengthen its crime-fighting strategies.

“As the South African Police Service (SAPS) do their work there are critical key aspects that they require support for. We call them enablers; in other words they make SAPS more effective and much more efficient,” he says.

He says there is a need to focus on technology, which is something that was raised at the summit.

“In terms of the impact of technology in policing, every stakeholder agrees that technology is a must-have and a key component of our overall system,” adds Mchunu.
