Multiple vehicle crash in Mpumalanga claims five lives

Five people have died  during a multiple vehicle crash on the N2 toll Road between Ermelo and Mkhondo in Mpumalanga.

MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie explains that the driver of one of the two sedans was allegedly  speeding  and failed to stop and then collided with another car which went on to collide head on with a truck.

“All occupants in one of the sedans died on the scene. Subsequently the driver who caused the accident was arrested on the scene.”

Macie adds that traffic volumes have increased in many major routes in Mpumalanga ahead of the June 16th long weekend.  He says law enforcement officers are conducting stop and search operations to ensure that motorists drive with caution and adhere to traffic laws.

“Motorists have been  urged  to be cautious on the roads to ensure they arrive alive to their destinations. Road blocks, as well as stop and search operations have been intensified in major roads in the Province ahead of this long weekend. Traffic volumes started increasing on Friday afternoon as motorists were heading to different destinations. Road such as the R40, N11, N4 and N17 are amongst the busiest.  We have already arrested three motorists for different offences. We intensified our programme to make sure that with this long weekend our people are safe on our roads, we want to thank even our officers they are here assisting us even from the municipalities are here assisting us we are working together with our stake holders in the province in making sure indeed whether they were traffic officers from municipality they are all on the ground.”

Motorists have been urged to exercise patience and be cautious on the road. He says it is important for all road users to adhere to traffic laws or else they’ll be arrested.
