Ten of the 11 accused in the multi-million rand SASSA fraud scam case have been released on bail ranging from R10 000 to R30 000.

The accused appeared in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court south of Johannesburg today.

They face multiple charges including fraud, theft and cybercrime.

The state alleges they orchestrated an elaborate scheme involving creating fake SASSA profiles wherein millions were allegedly deposited and withdrawn from various SASSA pay points.

NPA Gauteng spokesperson, Phindi Mjondondwane says they accept the court’s decision.

“As the NPA, we accept the ruling of the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court to grant bail to the 10 accused in the SASSA fraud case.  As it marks a stage in the legal process and it is by no means the end of the case. This latest development does not deter out commitment in ensuring those that that are accused of misappropriating public funds are held accountable.”
