Teaching and learning have been disrupted in some schools in KwaZulu-Natal due to damage caused by strong winds this week. Amongst the schools affected is Kwamadlala Primary School in Pietermaritzburg.

The provincial Department of Education says they are assessing the amount of damage caused by the inclement weather conditions in the province.

The department’s spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi explains, “Given the weather that we have experienced in the last three days as the Department of Education, we are taking stock of what has transpired, in terms of the destruction that had happened to our infrastructure in terms of schools. Some districts have sent us the information but we are still collating the information so that by the end of the day we will have a clear picture.”

Meanwhile, one of the affected residents in KwaMadlala, Pietermaritzburg, says they have taken it upon themselves to rebuild damaged schools.

“Our children have been disrupted at school. We have also noticed that some roof sheets have not been badly damaged so we have taken a decision to collect it so that it will be safe. If the department is delaying fixing the school, we will do it on our own. We do not want teaching and learning to be disrupted for a very long time. We are calling on the department to intervene.”
