Power utility Eskom says the electricity grid is stable ahead of next week’s cold front. This announcement follows warnings from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) of an upcoming extreme weather event beginning this weekend, which could bring snowfall to all provinces except Limpopo.
Weather outlook for Sunday & Monday, 8 – 9 June 2025.
Partly cloudy & cold to cool, with Isolated to scattered rain & showers over the central, western & eastern parts of the country but widespread over Western Cape as well as the south east coast of RSA on Monday. #saws pic.twitter.com/3YM4VQR801— SA Weather Service (@SAWeatherServic) June 6, 2025
Eskom spokesperson Daphney Mokwena says following planned maintenance at power stations, the power utility will increase power generation capabilities to deal with the increase in electricity demand.
“Adequate emergency reserves are in place and are being strategically deployed to support demand during the morning and evening peak periods, particularly as the country prepares for a forecasted cold spell in the coming. We plan to return a total of 2,550 MW of generation capacity to service ahead of the evening peak on Monday, 9 June 2025, to further stabilise the grid.”
