Gauteng police have opened a murder case after a body with gunshot wounds was discovered at Zamimpilo Informal Settlement, Riverlea, Johannesburg in the early hours of this morning.

Community members have gathered and are asking for police intervention to protect the residents.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo says it is suspected that the victim was killed in a crossfire during a shootout between the police and the suspects last night.

“It is reported that the police were conducting a routine patrol when they spotted a Toyota bakkie with three occupants that looked suspicious. The police tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver ignored them and sped off. A chase ensued, and the suspects turned into Zamimpilo informal settlement. As the police were searching for the suspects, they were shot at by the people who were in the informal settlement and they shot back. No injuries were reported during that shootout and police are still looking for the suspects.”
