Public Works to ensure accountability in George building collapse

2 minutes

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson says his department will continue to work with police, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and other relevant regulatory bodies to ensure accountability in the George Building collapse.

Macpherson was speaking after receiving the final report from the Council for the Built Environment (CBE) into the building collapse, which claimed 34 lives and injured 28 people in May last year.

Macpherson called the tragedy a result of systemic failures across various regulatory bodies and a lack of cooperation among key stakeholders.

Macpherson says they will study the report and develop a pathway to ensure that a tragedy like this never happens again.

“As I’ve committed to previously, after studying this report I will personally return to George and present the findings to the families affected by the tragedy. They deserve to hear directly from me and not through the media about what went wrong and how we can rectify. This collapse was entirely preventable. We will therefore work towards accountability and address any errors which may have been identified,” says Macpherson.
