Residents of an Amanzimtoti apartment complex, south of Durban, have expressed shock after a police shootout led to the death of Philangenkosi Makhanya, the main suspect in the murder of 30-year-old Olorato Mongale.

Philangenkosi Makhanya was killed in a shootout with the police. He is one of 3 people the police have been looking for in connection with the murder.

Makhanya’s parents have been taken in for questioning and have since been released.

The father’s car has been linked to the murder, while the mother allegedly tipped Makhanya off.

The chairperson of the body corporate where the shooting took place, Denise Rajman, confirms that security protocols will be reviewed following the incident.

“I had the residents calling me and quite disturbed and quite worried, especially the women who reside alone were quite taken aback as to what happened, and given the security measures that we have, you know. We let the residents in using a code, but obviously we don’t know the type of all the visitors that do come in. But from what I now gather, that you know he was obviously a friend of this guy and hiring vehicles over a period of time, so obviously at this point in time we have to re-look at security measures in the complex once again.”

The hunt continues…

KwaZulu-Natal police say they are still on the hunt for two suspects who are linked to the murder of Mongale.

The body of the 30-year-old master’s student was found near Alexandria in Johannesburg last Sunday.

Earlier this week, the task team investigating the murder traced two of the suspects to Phoenix and Kwamashu in KwaZulu-Natal.

They say two other people who were with Makhanya in a car on Thursday are also being questioned.
