eThekwini Municipality has raised concerns about the increasing rate of HIV infections among adolescent girls. This after it was revealed that over 7,600 cases of teenage pregnancy were recorded between April 2024 and April 2025.
To address the alarming increase, the municipality hosted a Teenage Pregnancy Indaba earlier this week.
Chairperson of Community Services at the municipality, Councilor Zama Sokhabase says officials, educators, and civil society leaders gathered to discuss urgent interventions.
“The teenage pregnancy indaba was directly responding to the areas of concern after receiving the statistics and reports from the quarterly District 8 council meeting, which we hold quarterly and is chaired by our honorable mayor. The stats that we are receiving are huge. It’s 7627 girls, aged 10 to 19. That’s why we just collaborated to mitigate these stats,” says Sokhabase.
