Investigation launched into Durban medical intern’s death

Medical Ombudsman Professor Taole Mokoena has launched an investigation into the death of a medical intern at Durban’s Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital last week.

It’s alleged that the 25-year-old Dr. Alulutho Mazwi collapsed at work after being denied sick leave by his manager.

Several trade unions and associations have since highlighted the poor working conditions medical interns are working under.

The Medical Ombudsman says his office was requested by Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi to investigate the matter.

Apart from the circumstances surrounding Dr. Mwazi’s death, a team will also look into working conditions and whether there are systemic problems.
