National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola says e-hailing driver Samuel Mogongwe may be the mastermind behind the disappearance of journalist Aserie Ndlovu and his partner Zodwa Mdhluli.

Mogongwe occasionally transported Ndlovu and Mdhuli, who are missing.

Masemola briefed the media at the KwaMhlanga Police Station in Mpumalanga after visiting the couple’s families.

Five suspects have been arrested.

Masemola says Mogongwe, who made his first court appearance on Tuesday, was initially not a suspect in the case.

“One of the arrested persons is someone who was driving the victims of which was our key witness all along, but now it has turned out that he is a suspect himself and that is part of what took the investigation so long. Because someone we trusted as assisting us only later to realize we should not be looking further, but closer to us and that is what led to the breakthrough in the investigation,” says Masemola.
