Zanzou nightclub assault accused back in court on Monday

A Congolese national accused of the assault and torture of patrons at Zanzou nightclub in Pretoria is expected to appear at the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Monday. The man was arrested in Yeoville, Johannesburg, in February after videos surfaced showing young men at the nightclub being sexually violated.

He faces multiple charges, including eight counts of compelled sexual assault and six counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The 41-year-old man was granted R10 000 bail when he appeared in court in April. The magistrate ruled that he be granted bail, stating that he had shown that his release was in the interest of justice.

The court also found no reason that he would evade trial, taking into consideration his asylum seeker status in South Africa. The case was then postponed to today for further investigation.
