The 11 accused in the R260 million South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) fraud case will be back in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg on the 10th of June to continue their bail application.

They are facing more than 1 000 charges related to fraud and theft.

The accused faked profiles and committed identity fraud in order to withdraw funds from SASSA pay-points late last year.

The accused, who appeared in court yesterday, have been remanded in custody.

The accused were informed that they will spend another month behind bars.

The decision came after a lengthy back-and-forth between the state and defense lawyers.

Magistrate Maggie Van Der Merwe ruled that there is sufficient evidence presented against the accused to warrant further detention.

The magistrate also sought clarity on the employment contracts of the accused individuals employed by SASSA, as it remains unclear whether their contracts have been terminated.

This clarification is necessary for the magistrate to proceed with her ruling.
