Severe weather warnings issued in SA, yellow level 4 for Gauteng

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a severe warning of thundershowers across the country, including Gauteng, with a yellow level 4 warning.

Forecaster Lehlogonolo Thobela says these storms may be severe, with a warning also in place for severe thunderstorms in KwaZulu-Natal, North West and Northern Cape.

“A yellow level two warning for severe thunderstorms is expected on the northern parts of  KwaZulu-Natal. We expecting these thunderstorms to remain yellow level two on the Free State, North West and Northern Cape, stretching to Gauteng, a yellow level four warning for severe thunderstorm specifically for the southern parts of the province. We expect widespread showers and thunder showers into the afternoon. For the northern areas, it will be a yellow level two for the minor impact of heavy downpours to localise flooding. (There is) possibility of damaging winds and hail and lightning in Gauteng.”

In the City of Tshwane, Emergency Services has warned communities to remain on high alert due to rainy weather conditions.

EMS Spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni says emergency services will be on alert for any incidents.

“We call on communities to observe the following safety measures. If possible, stay indoors and away from metal objects that conduct electricity (barbed wire fences, power lines, etc) which may be hit by lightning. Avoid outdoor activities such as fishing or playing golf in the rain as the fishing rods and golf clubs may attract lightning. When outdoors during lightning activity, immediately get out and away from ponds, lakes and other bodies of water.”

KwaZulu-Natal

The SAWS says a cold front accompanied by thundershowers is expected to pass through KwaZulu-Natal this afternoon.

Weather forecaster Wiseman Dlamini is urging residents to remain cautious at all times.

“We are expecting a cold front to pass through over the province later in the afternoon and the whole province today is expected to remain fairly cloudy and overcast. There is a bit of a chance of showers and thundershowers from today and to the evening. Tomorrow, we do expect some more showers and thundershowers over the province with 30% in most parts of the province and expect 60% in extreme western parts of KwaZulu-Natal. There is a notification that there will be a good amount of rainfall for areas around Uthukela District as well as Amajuba tomorrow afternoon.”
