The Board of Directors of Universities South Africa has expressed deep concern over violent student protests at Walter Sisulu University’s Mthatha campus in the Eastern Cape. This comes after a person was shot and killed during the unrest.

The Chairperson of the Board, Professor Francis Peterson, describes the incident as deeply unfortunate and calls for calm and proper engagement between students and university management.

“We acknowledge that the protest stemmed from concerns about living conditions, and we commend the university council for acting swiftly in launching an inquiry,” Peterson says.

He further urges students to seek peaceful ways of resolving disputes, “While we await the outcome, we urge aggrieved students to follow proper channels in engagement. Peaceful dialogue ensures that voices are heard and their safety is protected.”

The incident has sparked renewed calls for universities to strengthen student engagement and improve communication regarding grievances, especially where student welfare and campus safety are concerned.
