Manhunt launched following Sophiatown scholar driver’s killing

Police have opened a case of murder and are searching for suspects after a scholar transport driver was allegedly shot and killed in Sophiatown, Johannesburg, on Thursday morning.

Gauteng Police Spokesperson, Mavela Masondo says the 60-year-old had dropped off the children at schools when he was shot while inside his vehicle at the stop sign.

He says, “Police have opened a case of murder and are on a lookout for the suspects after a 60-year-old scholar transport driver was allegedly shot and killed in Sophiatown on Thursday, 17 April 2025 at approximately 07h15. The motive for the killing cannot be confirmed at this stage.”

Masondo adds, “Police are appealing to anyone who might have the information that can assist in the investigation to please call the nearest police station or call crime stop on 08600 10111.”
