Gauteng traffic authorities say law enforcement operations will be heightened across the province from today ahead of the Easter long weekend.

This as the Easter season is characterised by high traffic volumes, with motorists driving to various holiday destinations.

Traffic officers will conduct roadblocks on key roads to address speeding, drinking and driving as well as reckless and negligent driving, to ensure the safety of all road users.

Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane says law enforcement officers will also be deployed to crime hotspots.

Maremane has advised motorists to stay alert and not to drink and drive.

“Avoid isolated routes when driving alone and always remain alert. Practice defensive driving; avoid risky overtaking or speeding. Keep valuables out of sight to deter criminal activity. Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Report reckless or dangerous behaviour to authorities. Ensure that all passengers are seated and wearing their seatbelts. Postpone or delay travelling during poor weather conditions.”

Tips for road safety:

Limpopo

Meanwhile, in Limpopo, authorities in Polokwane say that traffic volumes have already started picking up in the province.

Transport and Community Safety MEC Violet Mathe says that more resources will be deployed to the main roads leading to big churches in the province.

She says that’s where most of the road fatalities happen.

“It started yesterday already, and we’ll be monitoring specifically the R21 road, which leads to the two big churches. That road we’re going to monitor 24/7 because of there are many fatalities happening on that road. Firstly, pedestrians are being hit by cars, again that road leads to the MopaniTzaneen, but via Moria. So, already, congestion has started from yesterday.”
