Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has warned that any learner found to be involved in gang-related violence will be suspended.
This comes after two learners were stabbed at two separate schools in Orange Farm in the south of Johannesburg this week.
Yesterday, a grade eleven learner was stabbed and his alleged attacker, a grade ten learner, was arrested.
The incident followed a physical altercation at the Vulanindlela Secondary School.
On Monday, a gang stabbed a learner in an apparent retaliatory attack at the Thetha Secondary School.
Gauteng Education Spokesperson Steve Mabona says police have committed to increasing visibility around the schools.
“The MEC has indicated that he condemns all the acts of violence and commits that we will ensure that our schools remain safe at all times. And all those learners who are afraid to go to school, we encourage them to do so. We have a commitment from the police that they will be patrolling. And the parents are called upon to assist to instill discipline in their children so that we have disciplined children in our schools.”
