Ekurhuleni engages taxi industry to ensure no violence at new rank

The City of Ekurhuleni says it has engaged the taxi industry regarding the newly completed state of the art Bluegum View Taxi rank in Duduza.

The city says the aim of the meeting was to ensure that the facility does not become the source of ongoing taxi violence.

Eighteen people have died in taxi-related attacks in Ekurhuleni since the beginning of the year.

The taxi rank was closed more than 10 years ago after violence between warring taxi associations.

Ekurhuleni Roads and Transport MMC Andile Mngwevu, “We have met with taxi associations that will be operating here and they assured us that there won’t be any kind of violence around the area and we have involved our law enforcement officers, your EMPS and SAPS to work with us so that we can curb any potential violence that might erupt. So, all stakeholders in the taxi industry have agreed that we are going to work together.”
