Higher Education Minister Dr. Nobuhle Nkabane is expected to visit the Walter Sisulu University’s (WSU) Mthatha Campus in the Eastern Cape today.

This comes after one person was gunned down and several others wounded during a student protest yesterday.

The students’ issues include a lack of residence placements.

University management has condemned all forms of violence and intimidation on campuses.

Higher Education Department’s Spokesperson Camagwini Mavovana says the Minister is worried about the situation on the university’s Mthatha campus.

Mavovana says, “The Minister conveys her sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and wishes a full and speedy recovery to those who sustained injuries. Dr. Nkabane is resolute that no student should ever be harmed while accessing their right to education. This must be the last time we are forced to respond to such a tragedy at our institutions of higher learning.”
