Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane has condemned the violence that claimed a life at the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape.
A person was shot and killed whilst two others were wounded.
Ministerial spokesperson Camagwini Mavovana says the minister will visit the campus within the next few days.
“The Minister strongly condemns all forms of violence and intimidation on university campuses and reiterates that students, staff, and all members of the academic community must be protected. Institutions of higher learning must remain safe spaces that nurture learning, dialogue and development. The Minister has also requested that the university furnish her with a comprehensive report on the incident as a matter of urgency and without delay, given the seriousness of the situation.”
Meanwhile, police in the Eastern Cape say they’re conducting an investigation into what led to the fatal shooting at the University’s Mthatha campus.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana says, “Police are still conducting a preliminary investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the shooting. So, it would mean that at this stage no arrests have been made and no one has been charged. We are still trying to investigate to ascertain what actually transpired and what led to the shooting.”
