Police in the Eastern Cape say no arrests have been made after the fatal shooting of a Walter Sisulu University (WSU) student at the Mthatha campus, as access to the crime scene is blockaded by protesting students.
The shooting incident happened earlier today when protesting students allegedly went to the residence manager’s home to complain about the bad state of their accommodation. Police spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana says it is alleged that the residence manager fired shots, killing one student while another was rushed to the hospital.
“It is reported that students mobilised and in the process the residence manager’s car was set alight and his wife was hit on the head with a hard object. The family was rescued by Mthatha Public Order Policing. Police management are currently outside the compass trying to manage students who want to block the N2. No arrests have been made as yet as the students are preventing the police from going to the crime scene as well as to get more information from witnesses” Gantana says.
Meanwhile, the SRC’s Themba Zikhali has told the SABC that they have evidence showing that no warning shots were fired.
“When coming back from the KGB singing, he decided to come out with a gun and he started shooting students. So, we’ve got a lot of evidence. We don’t want anyone to use allegedly because we saw what happened. There was no warning shots he started shooting students, he shot three students,” Zikhali says. – Additional reporting by Nomzwanele Mngoma.
