Walter Sisulu University (WSU) students at the Unitra Campus in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape are up in arms after a student was shot dead and three wounded during a protest this morning.
The protest comes after students claim to have raised numerous issues with the university including residence placement and policies.
It is alleged that a group of students were approaching a staff member’s house when shots were fired, resulting in the death of one student.
Students are angry and have reportedly burnt a vehicle belonging to a staff member.
Student Representative Council (SRC) President, Themba Zikhali says they want their grievances to be addressed.
Zikhali says, “The biggest issue that we have is the issue of residence, the first one is residence non-maintenance, no appliances in our residences, residence policy that we cannot have visitors. We don’t have water, we don’t have WI-FI, we don’t have curtains. Those are the main issues that we have.”- Additional reporting by Olwethu Matsipane.
