NGO raises concern over DNA testing backlog’s impact on GBV cases

A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) in Kimberley has raised concerns over the ongoing DNA testing backlog, saying it poses serious challenges for victims of crime, particularly those affected by gender-based violence.

The South African Police Services Forensic Science Laboratory is currently dealing with a DNA backlog of over 140 000 cases. This delay has raised concerns about the timely prosecution of offenders and the overall effectiveness of the justice system.

Director at the Shaine Griqua Advice and Development Centre, Shaine Griqua, has called for the establishment of a forensic laboratory in the Northern Cape.

“I want to see the Northern Cape becoming a province with a laboratory. I want to see the government of Northern Cape calling on Premier Zamani Saul to invest and redirect money so that they can establish such in this province so that we can deal with this backlog. That is very much important,” said Griqua.

The backlog continues to hinder the processing of cases across the country, affecting the delivery of justice for many victims.
