Transport Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa says content creation behind the steering wheel is becoming a new pandemic on the country’s roads.
The ministry launched the Easter Arrive Alive Campaign in Gqeberha on Sunday as part of its heightened communication and awareness surrounding road fatalities.
Hlengwa says drinking and driving is still a major contributor to accidents.
“KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Limpopo, Gauteng and Mpumalanga account for about 78% of our road fatalities. Drinking and driving continues to be a problem. Over the past weekend, 245 people were arrested throughout the Eastern Cape for drinking and driving. Speeding is another contributory factor. The heightened level of the usage of cell phones behind the steering wheel and is generally around content creation for Instagram, TikTok, amongst others. We are therefore focusing on our roadblocks and to remove vehicles that are unroadworthy from our roads.”
