The incident has raised safety concerns in courts throughout the country.

Committee’s chairperson Oscar Mathafa says, “We raised the security breach as a disaster waiting to happen. And the reason we raised it is that when we did our oversight visit to the KZN division. We’ve picked up metal detectors are not working. The number of securities are too few. The court entrances are small, so when they do the manual pad down as the fall back from the X-ray machine not working – that in itself becomes a distraction. That if there’s any prohibited object that can be slipped in, it can be slipped in during that process because there is a distraction. Do we have any CCTV cameras? Yes, they are there. Equally, some of them are not working.”
