The prosecutor in the case of the looting of the VBS Mutual Bank, Hein van der Merwe, will do a re-cross examination of a key state witness today in the Special Commercial Crimes Court in Polokwane, Limpopo.

The witness has been testifying in camera in the trial of former Thulamela Municipal mayor, Avhashoni Tshifhango.

Tshifhango allegedly received a bribe in form of a vehicle valued at more than half a million rand after the municipality invested R30-million in the now defunct bank.

Van der Merwe first cross-examined the key witness who was a manager at one of the VBS branches two months ago.

He has now opted to re-cross examine the witness today.

Yesterday, the witness admitted that he made some mistakes in the evidence he provided in the Terry Motau report because he was under pressure and was not given enough time to prepare when he was interviewed.

He also revealed that the bank used fraudulent documents to by-pass proper processes.

Meanwhile, the collapse of VBS Mutual Bank has left a trail of financial devastation, with many retail depositors, including pensioners and low-income individuals, still struggling to recover their lost savings.
