The solar industry has welcomed cabinet’s adoption of the South African Renewable Energy Master Plan (SAREM).

The plan is a collaborative effort whose aim is to build energy security in the country.

The South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) participated in the development of the plan.

Economic growth and job creation are among the objectives of the plan.

SAPVIA CEO, Dr Rethabile Melamu says, “SAPVIA has been part of the development of SAREM since the beginning, several years ago and we glad that we are finally here, and we can get the manufacturing and localisation going in SA. I think the next step is for government to clarify which parts of the value change, solar or wind, they plan to incentivise. We going to help them identify the components that are easily localised in South Africa.”
