The family of Mpho Mkhumbeni, who was an inmate at the G4S-run Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein, is still demanding answers. He died at the facility last month, after an alleged assault by prison employees.
The family was initially told that Mkhumbeni had died from an asthma attack. But an autopsy report confirmed that he was beaten to death.
Police say the inquest docket that was opened has been changed to a murder investigation, but they have yet to make any arrests.
Bongile Mkhumbeni, Mpho’s brother, says the autopsy report points to assault and gas inhalation.
“As a family, we are completely distraught, saddened and shocked about what exactly happened or transpired there and what resulted in the reasons behind them killing our brother, and we would like to see the police take action and arrest these perpetrators, and after that as a family, we will take legal action. The police need to do their job,” Mkhumbeni elaborates.
