Protests in Clairwood over re-zoning by eThekwini Municipality

Protestors and members of the Clairwood Ratepayers and Residents Association have handed over a memorandum to eThekwini Municipal officials objecting to the city re-zoning the area as a logistics park.

The new re-zoning laws will adversely affect three historically religious sites, a church, mosque and temple.

Clairwood played a significant role during the apartheid area.

Chairperson of the Association Mervyn Reddy says they have handed over a memorandum to the Mayor’s office.

” The municipality wants to turn Clairwood into a logistics park that means all people including schools and religious sites will all be affected. Hence, we are here to stamp that out and say that Clairwood is not for sale, Clairwood is not for the capitalist and Clairwood will remain residential and we will fight tooth and nail to ensure that Clairwood remains a residential area. We acknowledge the fact that the Mayor’s office has sent representatives, they have accepted volumes of documents including a letter that has been signed and acknowledged by them. They have indicated to us that they will take about 3-4 days to go through the documentation and then contact us for a meeting to discuss further.”
