Joshlin Smith was reported missing from her home in Saldanha Bay in February 2024.
Western Cape Head of Violent and Serious Crimes, Brigadier Leon Hanana says Ayanda Letone, whose name keeps coming up in the kidnapping and human trafficking trial of Joshlin Smith, is a potential witness and is being kept in a place of safety in Cape Town.
Brigadier Hanana continued with his testimony in the trial within a trial in the Western Cape High Court Court sitting in Saldanha on the Cape West Coast.
He has also denied that the accused in the case were assaulted including Ayanda’s sister known as Maka Lima. Jacquen Appollis, Steveno Van Rhyn and Kelly Smith, the girl’s mother, are on trial in the High Court sitting.
Legal counsel for Van Rhyn, Advocate Nobahle Mkabayi asked Hanana if Ayanda was a witness to the case.
“Are you implying that Ayanda is a potential witness on this matter on that stage my lord, we treated everyone that would have helped the investigation if not we followed up versions to make sure that we exhaust the explanation in all the versions the person has given us on that stage.”
