Taxis at a rank
Commuters have been left stranded in the Buffalo City Metro in the Eastern Cape due to a taxi strike.
The Mdantsane East London Taxi Association embarked on a strike this morning leaving residents unable to commute to work and school.
The strike follows the arrest of taxi boss, Gabela “Gabs” Mtshala, last week.
Charges against Mtshala were withdrawn due to a lack of evidence.
Provincial transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose says the strike has severely affected scholar transport services, particularly in townships around East London.
“Scholar transport has been among the worst affected by this situation as throngs of learners in school uniform can be seen walking in town, in and around East London. These were the learners that were ready to go to school but unfortunately their scholar transport did not show up at their pick up points. We are looking at the situation with high police visibility, ready to attend to any situation. But what is encouraging is that we are not seeing anyone stand in the way of those who have decided to walk their way,” says Binqose.
Some roads were earlier blockaded but have since been opened.
