The South African Police Service (SAPS), led by the National Counterfeit Goods Unit, has seized illicit cigarettes valued at R4,5 million in Brits, North West. Three Bangladeshi nationals were arrested for violating the Immigration Act.

The successful operation was conducted with the support of Crime Intelligence and the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

A multi-disciplinary SAPS team, including members from the National Intervention Unit (NIU), Tactical Response Team (TRT), K9 Unit, Rapid Rail Police Unit, and Flying Squad, all deployed under Operation Vala Umgodi, also took part in the bust.

While the operation primarily focuses on combating illegal mining, it also targets broader criminal activities within the province.

SAPS has reaffirmed its commitment to clamping down on counterfeit and illicit goods, warning that these crimes endanger consumers, damage legitimate businesses, and weaken the national economy.
