The Gauteng Department of Health has dismissed claims of a widespread outbreak of a myiasis infection in Tshwane.

This despite three patients being diagnosed with myiasis disease – a condition where maggots infest the body and burrow under the skin.

The patients who were admitted to the Odi District Hospital in Tshwane over the weekend were later discharged.

Spokesperson Motaletale Modiba says the disease is not infectious, however, possible symptoms to look out for include painful, swollen boils on the skin among others.

“The department, through its Public Health directorate and Tshwane district health services, has investigated these claims and found no evidence of a widespread outbreak.
