KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) has confirmed its investigation into allegations surrounding KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Ipid says the probe is in connection with Mkhwanazi’s alleged interference with the arrest of a senior Correctional Services official in Richards Bay in 2023.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has confirmed that it has requested a sworn statement from Mkhwanazi by March 19.
It has clarified that the investigation follows an anonymous complaint from the public and not a letter written to Mkhwanazi from Ipid’s Acting Head of Investigations.
Ipid further states that the investigation is in its infancy stages and that it will only engage on the matter once the investigation is concluded.

Meanwhile, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has released a statement clarifying that he did not lay any complaint against Mkhwanazi.
“I do want to repeat that I have not laid any complaint against Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi. I do want to state, however, that we need to intensify our efforts on effective and efficient law enforcement in the Republic of South Africa,” adds Mchunu.
In a statement, the Minister says Mkhwanazi, like all the other provincial commissioners, is working hard in the fight against crime in KwaZulu-Natal.
The Ministry has noted the article in @News24 which was published yesterday concerning an alleged complaint by the Minister; @RSA_IPID has since issued a statement, clarifying the matter. pic.twitter.com/ECxNDOfCis
