Police management in the North West has welcomed the 15-year prison term imposed on convicted murderer Papa Madule by the Klerksdorp Regional Court. Madule was sentenced for the 2022 murder of 25-year-old Desmond Tutu of Kanana township near Orkney.

The court also declared Madule unfit to possess a firearm. According to a police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, Tutu was asked by Madule if he was a member of the SVK gang, and when he denied it, Madule stabbed him and fled the scene.

Mokgwabone says the incident happened in February 2022.

“Police and paramedics were summoned to the scene, where the victim was declared dead. A case of murder was registered and taken by the provincial anti-gang unit for investigation, which resulted in Madule’s arrest on Thursday, March 3, 2022. The accused was later granted R5,000 bail. Following a series of court appearances, Madule was found guilty and sentenced.”
