Minister of Human Settlements Thembi Simelane says they are looking at permanent housing solutions for flood victims in KwaZulu-Natal. Simelane is on a two-day visit to KwaZulu-Natal to assess damage in flood affected areas.

The province has experienced heavy torrential downpours in the last two weeks.

One woman who was living at the Gwala Road transit camp in Lamontville is still missing.

The flood victims have since been moved to temporary accommodation in the Durban CBD.

Simelane says they are experiencing challenges in phasing out temporary residential units.

“The ultimate task for us will be a permanent solution, temporal housing is temporal as the name saying. We are now facing challenges that in most instances where we establish TRU’s, they will outlive even our policy indicate TRUs should be. We are trying to look into towns, and we are looking into possibilities of purchase of land, purchase of buildings reworking them and repurposing them into a facilities and unity that can be permanently given,” says Simelane.
