Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane has inaugurated the Grand Central Social Housing project in Midrand, north of Johannesburg.

The initiative is part of the government’s efforts to provide affordable rental housing in urban areas, allowing people to live closer to their workplaces without paying exorbitant costs.

Simelane was joined by Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Tasneem Motara at the launch.

The project comprises of 990 rental units, all of which have already been occupied.

One of the tenants, Valerie Nlapho says the facility is convenient for them

“We have a tuck shop here; we have a gym as well. So, we do not even have to leave the area. Everything is managed well, and issues are attended to as to when they arise. So far so good, we have not had many issues. I think they just need more space.”
