Western Cape condemns attacks on alleged undocumented migrants

The Western Cape government has strongly condemned the violent attacks on alleged undocumented immigrants in the province.

A teenager and two Mozambican nationals were killed, and hundreds were left displaced in the Kwanonqaba township in Mossel Bay during protests against undocumented foreign nationals over the weekend.

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde says his cabinet received a briefing from the SAPS earlier on Wednesday on the latest developments.

The Premier has offered all available resources to the police and other relevant authorities to quell any further violence.

“We have a constitutional democracy. We believe in the rule of law, and of course, we cannot act illegally in this way. It is not who we are as South Africans. It does not fit in with Ubuntu. We must make sure that we have proper immigration systems in place. And of course, these are paramount in a constitutional democracy. But we cannot allow for violence as an answer. We cannot allow for lawlessness as an answer.”
