Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf during a press conference in Tehran, Iran November 27, 2024.
Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, says Tehran will not accept any agreement with the United States unless there is certainty that the rights of the Iranian people are protected.
His comments follow US President Donald Trump’s warning that the Department of Defense will intervene if a new deal is not reached.
Despite Trump saying the two countries were close to securing a deal, contentious issues remain, including safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the nuclear issue.
US officials say the revised proposal is more hardline and is intended to pressure Tehran to speed up talks and accept a framework previously submitted to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei.
Meanwhile, Alaeddin Salimi, a member of the Iranian parliament’s presiding board, says that lawmakers have finalized a plan to codify management of the Strait of Hormuz and expect it to become law. He added that only Iran and Oman have the right to decide how the strait should be managed, that Iran has begun consultations with Oman, which has expressed preliminary agreement, and that the plan could be finalized soon.
