Suspected disaster relief fraudster to appear in court

A key suspect in a major fraud case linked to the Human Settlements Flood Disaster Relief Fund is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning.

The suspect faces charges for illegally accessing emergency housing funds as part of a syndicate dismantled under the NenzaniLaEzweni Operation.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, says authorities are making progress in rooting out municipal officials and politicians who sold or rented RDP houses to undocumented foreign nationals in areas including eThekwini and uMtubatuba.

Spokesperson for the MEC, Ndabezinhle Sibiya says, “MEC Duma has emphasised the integrated approach when it comes to this racket because there are inmates who are involved, for instance, there’s a case which the unit in the Department of Human Settlements is busy investigating together with the Department of Correctional Services.”

“We are also interacting with the provincial police commissioner just to ensure that we arrest all the relevant rogue elements. And we’re very confident that we are now a step closer to dismantling this rot.”
