Captain Laurance Makgotloe at the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria on February 02, 2026.
Forensic and ballistic expert Captain Laurance Makgotloe is expected to make his second appearance at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
He allegedly failed to link firearms used in the murder of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart to at least thirty other high-profile murder and attempted murder cases.
Makgotloe was arrested by the Madlanga Commission Recommendations Task Team at his home in Pretoria two weeks ago.
Captain Makgotloe, a forensic and ballistic analyst with more than two decades of experience within SAPS, allegedly concealed crucial evidence in the Swart murder investigation.
Swart, an engineer attached to a Vereeniging company, was shot and killed in April 2024.
Exhibits linked to the case were handed over to Makgotloe for ballistic analysis.
Makgotloe subsequently compiled a forensic report, which investigators later found to contain glaring errors and omissions.
His charges include defeating the ends of justice and accessory after the fact, for misrepresenting and manipulating the report.
