The Independent Police Union of South Africa is calling for the precautionary suspension of the National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola.
Masemola is facing charges related to violating the Public Finance Management Act. This is in relation to a controversial 360-million-rand health tender linked to alleged criminal kingpin Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.
Masemola appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tueday and his matter has been postponed to the 13th of next month.
The union’s president Bethuel Nkuna says, “If the state that he failed PFMA duties where 360-million tender is involved and with other police officers being arrested. Keeping him in office may create a perception of conflict and may also raise double standards concern as junior members get suspended immediately for misconduct. And also public trust has to be restored.”
